Sorry God, I’m too busy doing good stuff

Have you ever been too busy? Too busy to help someone out? Well, as I being to look at how I spend my time, I am seeing a definite busyness. But, I’m busy doing good things. It is a very sad and pathetic day when I have to tell a good friend that I can’t care for him/her because I’m too busy being a Christian. As I think about it, I am appalled, angered, enraged at the hypocrisy that comes out of my life.

Have you ever been too busy? Too busy to help someone out? Well, as I being to look at how I spend my time, I am seeing a definite busyness. But, I’m busy doing good things. I going to Bible studies, worship nights, classes based on Biblical truth, helping organize fairly large events to strengthen Christians, and even leading in another Christian class. Wow, I’m some super great Christian huh?

Well, after looking at my schedule for a busier week, I was spending 3-5 hours at Church or doing church-related activities for six days out of the week. What a dedicated Christian huh? Well, not so much when a friend asks that I spend some time with him. What comes out of my mouth; “I’m sorry, I’m busy tonight, and tomorrow, and …”

It is a very sad and pathetic day when I have to tell a good friend that I can’t care for him/her because I’m too busy being a Christian. As I think about it, I am appalled, angered, enraged at the hypocrisy that comes out of my life. I’m just thinking of the scenarios. I rationalize within myself such things as these:
I’m sorry poor person, I’m too busy working and making money to give to charities to help the poor.
I’m sorry friend in need, I’m too busy doing the work of God to take time to help you on your way.
I’m sorry God, I’m too busy feeding the homeless to pray or read your word.
I’m sorry God, I’m too busy making money to help those in need for me to live a life of integrity at work.
I’m sorry friend, family member, co-worker, or neighbor, I’m too busy going to Bible study to share the love of Christ with you.
I’m sorry, I can’t help you financially because I’ve given all my money to ministries to help you.

Who am I to think I am somehow better than the Pharisees that Jesus so harshly rebuked? It angers me even more that this inconsistency has crept into my life. I am the person who has given the house I am in and responsible for the name, “The Embassy.” This name signifies that I am an ambassador for Christ here in the DC area. Did Jesus waste his time doing religious and good church things? Of course not, Jesus spent his time caring for those he loved and obeying everything the Father directed him to do.

I must remember that obedience is always better than sacrifice. Jesus so clearly laid out how to live my life. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and love your neighbor as yourself. How can I pass the opportunity to obey God and show Christ’s love to those around me with the pathetic excuse that I am too busy doing good religious stuff.

  1. I don’t think you should be so frustrated with yourself. You do alot of ‘good’ and though that is not the issue that you’re frustrated about, I still think you should recognize that you’ve always helped people to the best of your abilities. More importantly, you can’t help anyone despite business if you are frustrated with your own situation/life. Jesus took time to regroup … so should you: Self reflection versus self frustration.

  2. You are human, not Jesus. Only he could do “it” all. I think you need to lighten up on yourself & realize that your desire to serve has boundaries based simply on your own human limitations (each of us has differing confines). Time is a precious commodity & perhaps prayer will help you reallocate it as God feels it can best be utilized. This activity should happen immediately so you can shed yourself this guilt. We were not made to carry guilt nor anger; they are “wired” into all of us to motivate corrective action. In your case, maybe less time spent in one area will free you to be more available in another – I think God will help you decide. As the previous post said – Jesus teaches us to take time away from what’s going on to reflect & regroup & talk to the father (ie just before the supper for 5,000), do the same.

  3. No, you’re not Jesus (I don’t believe that to be your goal anyway) but you also have a good point. DC is filled with people on a mission of their own whether or not they coin it’s worth for God or not. More than the church involvement and titles we earn through leadership or financial giving is the importance of being available. I totally agree – free your schedule, and let God use you as a vessel as only He can. I know a pastor who has led more people to Christ by sitting with them at a bar than by just preaching it and putting on a “holy show”. I wish more people would realize the importance of discipleship. Your involvement in church although it’s service, is a lot of self-growth and fulfillment – an important concept. Learning to say no once in awhile and pouring into one or 2 people would be an worthy balance in my opinion.
